"Ascension in the Moonlight" Response

I believe the theme of Winchester's essay to be unexpected beauty. When the author first got to Ascension Island he thought it was boring and simple, with nothing interesting. Then his new friends showed him a beautiful place and they all witnessed something amazing together, that they couldn't see anywhere else. I liked the way he described the sand, waves, and sky in his essay. He called the sand "soft and sugary" and the water was "warm and velvet soft." He also describes the sky as "full of a blizzard of stars" and "inkily black."  This language adds a beautiful depth to his essay and shows us just how amazing his experience was. His word choice makes a seemingly simple night turn into something enchanting and unique.
