"Bicycle Love" Response Post
The theme of Goodspeed's essay seems to be the "journey of life" and changing perspectives. The author starts her essay by telling us that she hasn't ridden a bike in years and that she doesn't really have a desire to. Then, the optimism and fearlessness of her boss made her realize that she needs to do something more with her life; thus she decided to bike across France. One example of effective language in Goodspeed's essay was when she "felt utterly uprooted." She recognized that a new chapter in her life was starting and she needed to figure out what to do with it. Another example is when she realized she "wasn't afraid anymore" and "the bike-which at first made me feel vulnerable-now empowered me." Her new chapter of life was underway and she was finally facing it head on, ready to keep going. I liked these examples of language because I can relate to them. I'm in a new chapter of life too and knowing that someday I might feel empowered and ready to take on the world makes me feel better about feeling scared and unsure now.
