"Bicycle Love" Blog Response--Escalada
I believe the theme of Goodspeed’s “Bicycle Love,” to be that over time, experiencing and interacting with people, places, and objects can change one’s initial impressions--which are often times, negative--of said things. Initially, Goodspeed felt uneasy and anxious using her “Bad Boy,” believing it to be a hindrance; additionally, she expected the French people on her travels to be unfriendly and judgmental. However, near the end of her journey, Goodspeed felt that the bike “now empowered” her and that the strangers she had met along the way “had actually gone out of their way to look out for” her. I thought Goodspeed’s personification of France in the line, "I discovered France's alter ego: the one that loves cyclists and independence,” perfectly represented how her initial expectations didn’t align with her actual experiences in the country. Similarly, personifying the bike in the line, “The bike and I were a team. A couple. Together, we were indomitable,” was a great way to demonstrate to readers the extent in which Goodspeed had reconciled her feelings towards the bike.
