"Bicycle Love" Response
Throughout Goodspeed's essay "Bicycle Love", she develops her story of personal discovery while cycling alone through the south of France. I believe the main theme is perseverance because throughout her travels Goodspeed encounters many difficulties, both physically and emotionally, yet she pushes through in order to conquer her goals and fears. "I got a flat tire and actually enjoyed changing it" (Goodspeed 144), I enjoyed this passage because she explains how even though the flat tire may be a burden, she enjoyed being able to fix it herself and physically see her becoming stronger because of it. Another passage I enjoyed was, "I wasn't afraid anymore" (Goodspeed 147), this simple yet powerful passage shows how she had showed resilience to the opposition she faced while traveling alone as a young woman, and this stands out to me because I too want to travel alone without living and traveling in fear.
