'Bicycle Love' Response

Overall, I believe Goodspeed’s essay to represent the need for spontaneity and independence in one’s life, specifically in regards to traveling outside of one’s comfort zone. Thematically, the narrator sets up the story chronologically, illustrating how she started out her journey as timid and afraid, but ended filled with empowerment and good memories. For example, she began hesitantly, and “zipped along the narrow streets” (143), but as she went on “the speed and smoothness” of it all became intoxicating. Furthermore, she ends the essay on a note of reverence for a woman embarking on a 260 miles long trail, “at the reins of her own life” (148). This exemplifies how Goodspeed’s trip to France solidified in her an understanding and appreciation of impulsiveness and solo adventure.
