"Bicycle Love" Response
The theme of "Bicycle Love" is finding empowerment in the trials faced in life. I believe this to be the theme because in the very beginning of the story Goodspeed states that she started the journey after going through job loss and a breakup. She embarks on her journey and in the beginning feels afraid, but by the end of it she feels empowered by being able to overcome her obstacles. Even by the end of the story, she speaks with a woman who decides to hike to Canada's border. When Goodspeed inquires why, just like her own story, the woman’s life has fallen apart. And similarly she decides to embark on a difficult journey to prove to herself that she can keep on going through the trials life throws at her. Two things that I appreciated about Goodspeed’s language is that she included personification in the bikes, and actually found comfort in them as she struggled through her journey “The bike and I were a team. A couple” (pg. 144). I also appreciated the precise details she used in describing the journey such as when she gives an exact measurement of how far the next town was. “Four days and 120 kilometers into my trip.” (pg. 143) I felt that it gave more authenticity to her writing.
