"Bicycle Love" Theme- Schoenauer
The theme of “Bicycle Love” by Brianne Goodspeed is the importance of perseverance. The narrator experiences many different setbacks
along the bicycling trip and even states that she “was starting to
think the trip was a mistake” (Goodspeed 142). These setbacks included
getting lost, getting caught in a rainstorm, feeling cast out from a
Cathedral, and panicking on the plane ride to France. However, despite her feeling terrified and alone, she persevered and, in the end, found that she was reluctant to leave this place that she now loved. One example of effective language was when the narrator said “I’m
riding my bike. All alone. In fact, I’m terrified” (Goodspeed 142). Her
admittance of the fear she feels during this journey sets a mood for
the passage and makes her feel more genuine. Another example of
effective language states, “I loved France for being my place of
pilgrimage. I felt forever changed by it” (Goodspeed 147). Throughout both examples we can see both the struggles she faced and the experiences she gained by deciding to continue her journey. This proved to be inspirational to any person who can remain determined.
