"White Rabbit" Post
I understood the theme of Keith's essay "White Rabbit" to be: you can be physically prepared for situations but it isn't until you are mentally prepared that you can actually achieve things. My evidence for this theme is how Keith is extremely prepared for her hike but she doesn't see her accomplishment as a feat of strength but rather an accomplishment of being self-sufficient. One use of language that struck me as extremely effective was when Keith was describing all the ways a climb can be rewarding, "The reward can be the silence... a moose or a Canada jay... one step..." (Keith 7). I saw this as effective language because she explains how reaching the top of a mountain or the end of a journey isn't necessarily the best part, it is the journey itself and the things you see. Another piece of language I liked was Keith's respect for the dense snow, "I have learned to respect that which can swallow me" (Keith 2). She knows how dangerous and intimidating heavy snow can be but she respects it because of its immensity.
