"White Rabbit" Response

I understood the theme of Holly Keith's piece to be that the mind is even more important than the body when adventuring in the outdoors. She writes towards the end of the piece, "But it doesn't happen unless your mind takes your body there first," expressing the extremely important mental component of hiking specifically. She also includes the line, "To climb a mountain is to commit an imaginative act." She focuses on the journey as an mental more than a physical act. Keith focuses heavily on lists in her writing. A full sentence towards the beginning is nothing but a list: "The slope of the land, the space between trees, the quality of snow, animal tracks." Keith also utilizes repetition: "A fire-starting kit, a mug, and a knife: just in case... A screwdriver for the crampons, just in case." These techniques provide structure and straight-forwardness to the piece, matching the concentrated deliberateness with which she attacks the mountain.
