"White Rabbit" Response
I found the theme of Holly Keith's "White Rabbit" to be about boldness. Despite the obvious danger of hiking solo in such conditions, it is where the narrator feels most alive and most rewarded. It is the thrill of leaving the cave in favor of the vibrant, winter wilderness when everyone else doesn't have "any clue as to the exalted season they had hibernated through" (6). One aspect of her writing that stood out to me was her fondness for alliteration: from "cold curiosity" to "climb cavalierly", she used it well to enhance her style. The second aspect was the authority of her voice. Simply put, she knew what she was writing about. Whether through research or personal experience, she combined the gravitas of a respectable guidebook and the artistry of a good author into her story. Through this, she paints an enchanting portrait: to veer off the well-trodden path and "to follow the rabbit."
