"Why We Travel" Response

Iyer's reason for travel that resonated with me most is that travel is a way to escape your own reality for a period of time. You get to be "free of cast and job and standing" and "live without a past of future" (Iyer). I identify with these ideas because my longing for travel is always strongest when there are many stresses present in my life. The idea that you can temporarily venture to a new world and immediately become an unknown person excites me, and I always feel refreshed upon my return.
Another reason that spoke to me within the piece was how traveling allows you to bring knowledge of other cultures back home. He gave the example that "finding a gilded pavilion in Kyoto... allows you to take back a more lasting, private Golden Temple to your office in Rockefeller Center" (Iyer). In other words, traveling gives you experiences that transform into memories that you can access in your daily life in the "real world." These discoveries can help change one's perspective on things or simply be thought of fondly in hard times.
